“Discussing Dysphagia Together”
A project for Clinical Center NEMO (NEuroMuscolar Omnicentre), a highly specialized multidisciplinary center of excellence, designed to respond to the needs of those suffering from neuromuscular diseases such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and muscular dystrophies. The project was launched in 2015 to raise public awareness of a little known, yet widespread disorder – dysphagia.
The project was introduced with the launch of the video #AggiungiUnPostoATavola (#Add a Place at the Table) – featuring recipes for eating well, created in the kitchens of Niguarda hospital in Milan by two well-known chefs, Roberto Di Pinto and Misha Sukyas, followed by essential medical content capsules to promote knowledge of dysphagia.

Dysphagia is a dysfunction of the digestive system that results in difficulty, perceived or medically detected, in swallowing food and liquids. Not precisely a disease, but more a symptom of other diseases. 70% of those affected by neurological diseases suffer from it, and almost all those with neuromuscular diseases.
Dysphagia accompanies numerous pathologies and can be acute or chronic, requiring internal medicine or surgery, affecting both adults and children: childhood stroke and cerebral palsy, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, oropharyngeal cancer, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), to name a few.
